ROYAL BANK OF CANADA

The Discontinuous Future of Banking

With the increasing speed of change, there is a significant need to look further ahead; to explore, stress test, and pursue strategic alternatives. This must be done faster than ever, and with greater focus and intent. The transformative potential of technology is accelerating all of these changes and is a major force shaping how we live and work. Addressing change within the boundaries of increasing regulatory demands will limit, and compete with, the resources at the bank to facilitate such a transformation.

SERVICE DESIGN, ART DIRECTION, JOURNEY MAP

With 150+ years of institutional knowledge, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is the largest financial institution in Canada, with nearly 90,000 employees serving over 17 million clients worldwide.

The purpose of this project was (1) to explore the question of how to anticipate change and explore alternative future contexts, and (2) to systematically investigate the possibilities and direction of all of this change through new ways of thinking and developing RBC’s future growth.
